Editorial standards

How a post gets from draft to the page.

Page revised

  1. Who writes

Every post is signed RentRollBase Editorial Team. Posts start as machine drafts. Software and an outside model check each one before it is filed.

  2. What gets checked

Each claim that could be wrong is checked against a source, and the source is listed at the end of the post. Examples are labelled as examples.

  3. Rules that depend on where you are

Deposit and notice rules differ by state. A post states such a rule only when it names the state and the source. Otherwise it tells you what to look up.

  4. Fair housing

Leasing and advertising posts follow one idea: describe the unit, not who should live in it. Screening criteria in a post are examples. Write your own, keep them in writing and apply them the same way every time.

  5. What we leave out

No invented numbers, people, awards, clients or reader counts. No promises about rent, occupancy or results.

  6. Dates

Each post shows the day it went up and the day it was last checked. Checking it again moves the second date. Fixing a typo does not.
